Ridgeons League Premier Division 6th March 2010
In a Season when a very young and inexperienced side battled against all the odds this match stands out as it was our only official League win of the campaign (the 2-0 Boxing Day victory over Harwich and Parkeston being struck from the record books following the ‘shrimpers’ resignation). The three fixtures leading up to this game had seen us lose the reverse fixture at Newmarket 1-4, go down 0-6 at Woodbridge and crash 3-9 at Mildenhall the previous Saturday. I remember it being bloody cold and only the faithful few had ventured out. This fixture gave me my first view of the Odedoyin twins, Wale and Tola, who added both pace and more than a little physical menace to a side who could play some good football but were constantly bullied out of games.
All the early play came from us and we were rewarded when Luke Rogers played in Scott Yearling who’s first time cross was flicked home at the near post by Wale. It was a terrific goal but we had hardly finished celebrating when the visitors equalised with a free header. The doom merchants amongst our ranks (this means you bro), expected a collapse of biblical proportions however we came back strong and Wale’s pace saw him break clear of a floundering Newmarket rear guard to shoot past the advancing keeper to restore our lead. And then it got even better as Scott’s volleyed shot hit a defender square in the ‘break basket’ ….. ‘PENALTY’, yelled the sobs in gest and ‘to our utter amazement’, the ref actually pointed to the spot! Now then, you have to understand that up until this point that Season virtually every decision seemed to go against our young team, indeed some of what we witnessed was farcical to the point I actually considered not watching games, such was my disgust in what I saw from the officiating. I counted this penalty decision as the first break we had had and as such represented a positive change in fortunes as Luke stepped up to convert the spot kick and put us 3-1 ahead. A combination of Bobby “he’s orange and round” Jones and the post maintained our advantage going into the break and if we thought things could not get any better we were wrong. We began the second half on the offensive with Luke, Wale and Scott terrorising the visitors back line while Marley Spindler was having a stormer in midfield. On 55 minutes Luke broke down the right and crossed to Wale who’s shot cannoned off the underside of the bar straight to James Raby who rammed in the rebound. Although Newmarket pulled another goal back it was the young Dragons who dominated the remainder of the Match and I left Broad Lane with a positive feeling. But hey, this IS Wivenhoe after all and within 48hrs we had been locked out of our Ground and were facing extinction!!.
There’s never a dull moment following the mighty Dragons, that’s for sure!
