BARRY CARTER (App 1 Goals 0)
Wivenhoe were Barry’s first club and he made a good impression playing full back for the Reserves but was never really given the opportunity to make his mark with the Senior side due to the good form of others. Made his only First Team appearance in a Worthington Evans Charity Cup tie at Mersea on 20/4/80 before leaving to link up with Stanway Rovers.
PAUL CHALMERS (App 56 Goals 20)
Striker who originally joined the Dragons in our Border League days, making his debut as a 15 year old on 1/10/77. Signed Youth forms for West Ham United and then went on to spend two years with Cambridge United before returning to Wivenhoe in July 1980. Made his last appearance on 29/8/83 before drifting into the Reserves and eventually departing to join local rivals Coggeshall Town and later Haverhill Rovers.
MICK CLARKE (App 53 Goals 8)
Utility player who had two spells at Broad Lane, making his debut on 21/8/82 after signing from Harwich & Parkeston, where he was previously Captain. Left after one season but returned from Brightlingsea United in August 1986 and made his final appearance on 4/10/86 before going back to Harwich and, eventually, ending his career at Brightlingsea.
FREDDIE CLAYDEN (App 45 Goals 23)
Striker signed in September 1981 from Billericay Town where he was their record scorer with 338 goals and played in all three of their successful F.A.Vase triumphs. Made his Dragons debut on 19/9/81 and was regarded as one of the best players to grace Broad Lane during the Essex Senior League era. Rejoined Billericay after one full season with us, then moved to Heybridge Swifts before briefly returning to Broad Lane in August 1985. Played his last game for us on 14/9/85 and joined East Thurrock United where he ended his career as Reserve Team Player/Manager.
TONY DALE (App 39 Goals 2)
Forward originally signed from local Border League neighbours Great Bentley. He made his debut on 27/8/83 but left towards the end of the 1983/84 campaign. Returned to Broad Lane during the 1985/86 season but ended the campaign in the Reserves, making his last First Team appearance on 26/10/85. Went on to play for Brightlingsea United and Mistley United.
CHRIS DINES (App 455 Goals 77)
Midfielder who was a great servant of the club, making his First Team debut at the age of 15 on 20/10/73 in a 13-2 Essex & Suffolk Border League Cup victory over Harwich Rangers. Apart from spells at Tiptree United (3 months) and Brightlingsea United (2 months), Chris spent over 16 years with the Dragons during which time he gained Representative Honours for Essex. Made his final First Team appearance on 20/12/88 and left to join Braintree Town before returning to Border League football with Gas Recreation.
BOBBY DUFFETT (App 56 Goals 6)
Defender signed in 1982. Formerly with Colchester United, Harwich & Parkeston, Clacton Town and Brightlingsea United, Bobby made his Dragons debut on 21/8/83 and became one of the few players of the modern era who have gone on to serve on the club’s Committee. Made his last appearance on 10/1/85 and had a brief spell as joint caretaker manager with Harry Welsh between December10th 1986 and January 24th 1987. His son Sean also played for the Dragons during the early 90’s.
TONY EVANS (App 1 Goals 0)
Midfielder and a short lived signing who played his only game in Wivenhoe colours on 10/1/84. During the course of his career Tony was on the books of Colchester United, Chelmsford City and Haverhill Rovers.
GENE EVERS (App 1 Goals 0)
Forward who made his only First Team appearance as a substitute in a Worthington Evans Cup tie against Lexden Wanderers on 23/10/85. Departed to link up with Harwich & Parkeston before going on to see service with local Essex & Suffolk Border League neighbours Alresford Colne Rangers.
MARK FARTHING (App 58 Goals 34)
Striker signed from Sudbury back in August 1984 having previously played for Colchester United Reserves and West Bergholt. Made his debut on 25/8/84 and played for the Essex Senior League Representative side before departing for Braintree Town in May 1986. Went on to play Professional Football in Finland for Kemi Palloseura as well as having spells with the likes of Heybridge Swifts, Brantham Athletic and Ipswich Wanderers. Made his last appearance in Wivenhoe colours on 14/1/92, although he played for Canvey Island throughout the 1991/92 campaign. Rejoined Sudbury Town in July 1992 where his goals helped them to Promotion to the Beazer Homes League Premier Division. Continued to score goals for West Bergholt in the latter part of his career.
NICK FERRIS (App 7 Goals 1)
Forward who joined Wivenhoe in July 1982 following a spell on the books of Arsenal Youth. Made his Dragons debut on 21/8/82 but drifted into local football after making his last First Team appearance on 25/9/82. Eventually resurfaced in the Colchester Sunday League with Tey Lion Athletic.
STEVE FOLEY (App 18 Goals 1)
Spent 14 years with Colchester United before joining the Dragons in September 1982, playing his first game on 18/9/82. Following the departure of Geoff Bennett, Steve became Player/Manager but resigned after a few weeks and departed Broad Lane in February 1983. Returned to make a final appearance on 5/10/83 before going on to see service with Brantham Athletic and Border League outfit Little Oakley as Player/Manager. Joined the coaching staff at Watford before returning to Colchester to coach the “U’s” Youth team. Had a couple of brief spells as caretaker manager of Colchester’s First Team as well as another short spell in charge of the Dragons in 1991. Spent a decade at Norwich City prior to joining Ipswich Town in a coaching capacity.
PAUL FOLEY (App 1 Goals 0)
A member of our Reserves during the 1985/86 campaign, Paul made one substitute’s appearance for the First Team on 27/11/85 before returning to local football. Became a member of the successful Lexden Sun F.C. Sunday League side after his departure.
PAUL FRASER (App 84 Goals 17)
Forward who made his debut in a Dragons shirt in a pre season Cup match in August 1982 having previously been on the books of Colchester United. Went on to play for Clacton Town (four spells), Tiptree United, Brightlingsea United and Stanway Rovers before returning to Broad Lane in July 1992. Popular with the Wivenhoe fans, Paul progressed up from the Reserves to become a First Team regular before leaving the club in the summer to join Cheshunt, after making his last appearance on Monday 17th April 1995.
